Every tattoo has a story.  Your tattoo might signify a place in your life or a remembering of a past event but all tattoos mean something more to their owners, then just the picture.

Humankind has always been drawn to tattoos.  Tattoos were and still are a way for us to distinguish ourselves from our peers.   Tattoos have symbolized many things in different cultures but ultimately they are the best form of self-expression.

But when did humankind’s obsession with tattooing begin? 

The origins of the name Tattoo can be traced to the Tahitian word “tatu”, which means to mark something and in this application it is the human skin.  Archeologists have been able to trace Tattoos back in our history to 12,000 BC.  This would indicate that we have always had a fascination with marking our bodies.  But what is interesting is, what these “markings” represent; the story behind what the picture tells.  In some society’s tattoos indicated that the wearer of these marks was a shaman or other religious figure but most modern society’s have associated tattoo’s with a negative stereotype.  This could not be farther from the truth.  Tattoos for most people are a way for them to express themselves and to mark a significant point in their life.  This is why shows like Miami Ink and L.A. Ink have done so well.  These shows on tattoos are reality television on people getting their tattoos and the story behind them.

In the 21 Century, tattooing has enjoyed a renaissance the likes of which has not been seen before.  Tattooists are artist, displaying their talent on the ultimate canvass the human skin.   And celebrities and the average person are lining up for their chance to distinguish themselves with their own mark.
